The frame's primary job is to hold the main PCB and the battery. The design changes between controller revisions were mainly on the PCB (stick modules, triggers, etc.), not the chassis.
BDM-010 & BDM-020 Frames: These are virtually identical. A frame from a 010 will fit a 020 and vice-versa.
BDM-030, 040, 050 Frames: These are also highly similar to each other. The main physical difference from the 010/020 is the screw post for the new vibration motor cable connector on the PCB.
Don't rely on the outer shell color. Find the model number on the sticker inside the battery compartment or on the original box:
CFI-ZCT1W: Contains a BDM-010 or BDM-020.
CFI-ZCT1W A01: Usually contains a BDM-030.

BDM-010/020 vs. BDM-030/040/050:
The most notable difference is the extra plastic post/screw pillar near the trigger springs on the 030+ frames. This post secures a small clip that holds the new, wider vibration motor ribbon cable flat. The 010/020 frame lacks this post.
You can use a 010/020 frame in a 030+ controller, but the vibration motor cable will be loose and could potentially get pinched. It's not ideal but often works.
Using a 030+ frame in a 010/020 controller is fine; you'll just have an unused screw post.
Trigger Spring Posts: The design of the posts where the L2/R2 trigger springs hook on is identical across all models.
Battery Connector Slot: The slot that holds the battery connector in place is the same.
When buying a replacement internal frame/holder:
For BDM-010 / BDM-020 Controllers: Search for "PS5 BDM-010 frame" or "PS5 controller internal frame V1". Frames labeled for 010 will work for 020.
For BDM-030 / 040 / 050 Controllers: Search for "PS5 BDM-030 frame", "PS5 controller internal frame V2", or "A01 / A02 frame". These will have the necessary post for the motor cable.
Universal/Unspecified Frames: Many aftermarket sellers list "For PS5 BDM-010 020 030 040 050". Examine the product photos closely. If you see the extra screw post near the triggers, it's a 030+ style frame. It will work in all models but is optimized for 030+.
Screw Posts are Fragile: The most common reason for replacement is a broken screw post (especially the ones near the triggers). Use proper screwdrivers and don't overtighten.
Aftermarket Quality Varies: Third-party frames can be slightly less rigid or have imperfect mold lines. OEM frames from broken controllers are best but hard to find separately.
Tactile Feel: The frame can affect the "clickiness" of the buttons slightly, as it determines how the plastic button pieces align with the PCB contacts.
Always Transfer All Components: When swapping frames, carefully move over the main PCB, battery, vibration motors, speaker, trigger mechanisms, and all screws.
