Battery Won't Hold

Minutes of play instead of hours. These cells are well past their design life now, and a fresh battery transforms an otherwise healthy handheld.

Dead Buttons

Shoulder buttons are the first to go on every DS generation — they are a simple mechanical switch that wears out. D-pad and face buttons are usually the membrane beneath them.

Broken Hinge

The DS Lite's hinge cracking is the single most common fault of that generation. The shell can be replaced, and the ribbon cable running through it usually needs checking at the same time.

Touchscreen Not Responding

These are resistive screens, not the capacitive glass on a phone, so they wear where you tap most. Recalibration helps briefly; a new digitiser fixes it.

Wi-Fi Problems

Mostly a DSi and 3DS complaint. Worth knowing the original DS only supports old WEP security, so it may be your router rather than the console.

Dead Pixels And Lines

Lines across a screen or a display that shows nothing usually means the ribbon cable, particularly on folding models where it flexes every time you open it.

Won't Read Cartridges

Cards not detected, or only working if held at an angle. The reader's contact pins wear and bend after two decades of use, and replacing the reader is a straightforward fix.

SD Card Not Detected

A DSi or 3DS that no longer sees its SD card. Sometimes the card itself has failed, sometimes the slot — we check the cheap possibility first before quoting for the other.

  • Nintendo 3DS XL

    Same internals as the 3DS in a larger shell. Screens, hinges and charging ports are the usual work.

    The 3D slider and upper screen ribbon are its own faults, alongside the usual hinge and charging port wear.

    Nintendo 2DS

    No hinge to crack, which removes the most common DS fault entirely. Screens and buttons are the usual work.

    Nintendo 2DS XL

    Folding again, so the hinge and the ribbon cable running through it are back on the list. Its shoulder buttons wear early, and the SD slot and charging port turn up about as often as on the rest of the 3DS family.
